INTERNET SAFETY SEMINAR:
Staying safe online is an important issue for both kids and parents. We encourage every PTO to host an internet safety seminar - two actually: a morning session for students and an evening one for parents.
Every school system has a School Resource Officer, a member of the police force that works within the schools to handle & monitor student issues and to raise awareness about drugs & alcohol. If your school system doesn't have an officer assigned to the schools, just ask your local police. Cost: Free
BANKING: Ask a local bank to talk about how a bank works, where money comes from, smart ways to save, and the importance of starting a savings account. Cost: Free
ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY: Ask a company or non-profit group to come in and talk about alternative energy, recycling, and the importance of developing earth-friendly products. By binging in different types of companies, the students are not just learning about how to help save the earth, they're also learning about different types of jobs/careers.
- Waste Management Company that recyles paper, plastics, and metals
- Clothing Designer/Shop that makes/sells eco-friendly clothes
- Car Manufacturer that makes electric or alternative fuel cars
- Solar Panel Manufacturer to discuss how solar panels operate and their different applications
- Plant Nursery/Farmer to talk about the benefits of organically-grown produce. Also, the importance of trees in the environment.
FIRE SAFETY: Ask your local fire department to come to your school and talk about fire safety. A school parent may even be a firefighter and be able to volunteer to do this. Have the firefighters wear their gear and bring a fire truck along (if possible). Sometimes the fire departments have handouts or fire hats they can distribute to the kids. Cost: Free
POLICE VISIT: Ask your local police department to come to your school and talk about safety. Cost: Free
AUTHOR VISITS: Ask your local library for information on authors of children's books that may be willing to come read a story and encourage children to read and write books. Cost: Varies
HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Contact your local historical society and ask them to speak about the history of your town/city or state. Cost: Varies from free to a few hundred dollars.
MUSIC: Have a musician come to the school and, in one week, teach the whole school songs and dances. On Friday, the entire school performs for the parents.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMMITTEE: Form a Community Outreach Committee at your school who's purpose is to teach the culture of giving which you want people to feel so they will give back to the school. Do this by coming up with needs in the community for the school to give to. Cost: Free
MARTIAL ARTS: Contact your local martial arts center and ask them to do a demonstration for the school. Martial Arts teaches self discipline, confidence, respect, fitness, relationship building, and self defense. The center should be willing to offer this demonstration at no charge as it will provide them with publicity and will likely result in student enrollment in their classes. Cost: Free
HEALTH & WELLNESS:
Ask a nurse from your school or local pediatrician's office, doctor, well-known or local athlete, or parent volunteer to come to school and talk to the students about good nutrition. Similarly, ask a dentist to come and speak about oral hygiene. The benefit to the pediatrician or dentist office is that they will have an opportunity to distribute their literature to the families. Cost: Free
All programs are booked directly through the individual program providers. Inclusion in the directory does not constitute an endorsement.
