Make a Habit of It
SCAVENGER HUNT IDEA #2 -- "MAKE A HABIT OF IT!"
Imagine the different areas of the playground as the different habitats in which animals/birds/fish live. Provide clues that lead students to the correct habitat and animal/bird/fish. Designate the different areas with simple shapes cut from colored poster board and place them in different areas as clues. For example:
- Rainforest: cut tree shapes from green poster board
- Antarctica/Arctic: cut icebergs from white poster board.
- Dessert: hang several yellow suns (indicating a very hot environment)
- Mountains: cut mountains from brown poster board (use white to make the snow caps)
- Oceans: cut waves from blue poster board
- Caves: cut caves from black poster board.
The Clues:
- This very short but very long reptile enjoys a warm, humid climate. (Answer: Snake located in the Amazon).
- This bird may not be able to fly but is a great swimmer in icy water. (Answer: Penguin located in Antarctica).
- This lumpy mammal can last for days without water in this sandy land. (Answer: Camel located in the Desert).
- This horned mammal is sure-footed enough to travel the top of the world. (Answer: Goat located in the Mountains).
- This "smiling" swimmer is a friend to man but a foe to sharks. (Answer: Dolphin located in the Ocean).
- This flying rodent wakes when we sleep. (Answer: Bat located in Caves).
Hang color-coded pictures of several animals at each location by taping images onto a piece of colored construction paper. For instance, at the location of the mountain, hang pictures of the mountain goat, but also hang some decoy pictures such as whales, elephants, eagles, etc. The students must determine to which animal AND location the clue refers and gather them to complete the scavenger hunt. You will know if the students gathered the correct animal/bird/fish from the correct habitat by the color.
