Fundraising for an Individual
Just as PTO's rely on school families to help raise money for the school, there may be occasions where some families may need the assistance of the PTO.
Fundraising for Families in Need
If you have a student in your school that is in the unforturnate circumstance of needing extensive medical care, the school community may want to come together to help raise funds for that individual.
When raising money for individuals, there are several things to consider. The Massachusetts government webpage offers some great information to get you started, but be sure to search your own state's site. We ran a search on "Fundraising for Individuals" on the mass.gov website to find the following page, Click here.
In addition to the hundreds of fundraising ideas we list for schools, following are ideas to help raise money for these individuals in need...
1. GRANTS

2. PARTNER WITH A LOCAL VENDOR
The community came together to help a Massachusetts family with an ill child by partnering with a local garden nursery. During a weekend in early December, this garden shop agreed to donate a percentage of sales to this particular family (approximately $5 for every Christmas Tree sold, $2 for every wreath, and 10% of other holiday decorations).
In addition volunteers were allowed to set up other sale tables the entire sale from these tables went directly to the family:
- Bake Sale - cakes, cookies, breads, pies, candy, etc.
- Beverages - water, coffee, hot chocolate
- Pictures with Santa
- Purchase an Ornament - Customers could purchase a paper ornament, write a kind note to the child with the illness, and hang it on a tree. At the end of the weekend the decorated tree was then delivered to the home of the family!
The event brought in so many community supporters that likely would have purchased their holiday decorations elsewhere, that the garden nursery extended the event for a second weekend. The event raised more than double what was expected! It was a win-win arrangement for both the nursery and the fundraisers.
