PTO Insurance
PTO Insurance should be considered as part of the PTO budget annually. Insurance protects your group from financial loss or theft and is a relatively small expense that has the potential to offset a much larger one.
Research & confirm exactly what coverage, if any, is available from the school then talk to the brokers that understand the types of coverage a PTO may need.

PTO INSURANCE
Some PTOs are protected under the school's blanket policy, but many are not. It's recommended that a PTO research & confirm this annually by checking with the school finance department.
Very few School Districts in the country provide coverage for PTO activities. In fact, it is a well known and proven method of loss control for the School District to require all groups using School District facilities carry at least $1,000,000 of General Liability and name the School District on the PTO policy as an Additional Insured. Of the few School Districts which do actually insure some PTO events, it is only with prior approval for a specific event. Also, the School District coverage will not extend to any PTO activities off campus.
Keep in mind that of the more than 15,000 public school districts, less than 5% provide insurance coverage for PTO activities and then only over and above a very large deductible such as $500,000 or $1,000,000 which the School District, as a municipality, can afford to pay and which the PTO cannot.

Types of Insurance
As you review the different types of insurance, also keep in mind that in the event of a lawsuit, the PTO and the the school are not the only ones at risk. PTO Officers can also be personally and individually named in a lawsuit, placing their personal assets (home, vehicles, savings, etc.) at risk.
Types of Insurance:
- General Liability - Blanket protection for PTO sponsored events; such as bodily injury, property damage, personal injury, advertising injury, products liability, host liquor liability, fire legal liability.
- Directors' & Officers' Liability - Provides liability protection related to errors & omissions, misleading statement or breach of duty as a director or officer.
- Bond - Protection related to crimes such as theft, forgery, alteration, or embezzlement.
- Accident Medical - Provides insurance coverage for out-of-pocket medical expenses resulting from an accident at a PTO sponsored event.
